Our team at the Project 2049 Institute is alarmed by the reports of the Burmese military’s detentions of civilian government and civil society leaders, as well as various democracy advocates. The previous junta rule was a dark period for the people, and the Burmese have experienced a turbulent journey towards peace in their country. Continuing to work toward genuine reform of the country’s political institutions and the building of a democratic system is the only path toward a better life for all of Burma.
We urge the Burmese military to honor the election results, and respect the democratic process and rule of law. The Burmese people and the nascent civil society organizations that fought to expand liberty remain in our thoughts during this difficult time.
